Behind the Scenes of Turning My PSP Into Something New!
During the end of my Christmas vacation in Antigua and Barbuda, I found myself reflecting on nostalgia while searching for my driving test exam materials. As I sifted through memories, I came across my old PlayStation Portable. For those who don’t know, the PlayStation Portable was Sony’s handheld console designed to compete with Nintendo’s devices. I thought this device was broken, and never picked it up again only to realize that it worked out of the box after plugging it in.
As I no longer live in Antigua, I chose to take back my and modify his nearly 20-year-old device to play Final Fantasy Dissidia 012. (Which is my favorite video game alongside Skyrim) The goal of this was to give me a hands-on project that not only revived an old favorite but also showcased his tech skills and passion.
Here are some reasons I revived this device:
-
Nostalgia: The PlayStation Portable was ahead of its time, and tinkering with it reminded me how far technology has come, and how much we can learn from the past. Features like non-intrusive sound and tactile feedback were innovative for their time, while the retro interfaces sparked inspiration for modern design.
-
Problem-Solving is Universal: Whether it’s debugging code or fixing hardware, the thrill of solving puzzles never gets old. My first step was ensuring the device powered on when plugged in thankfully, it did! From there, I replaced the battery and installed a new back-plate to secure it. It’s a reminder that breaking down problems into smaller, manageable steps is key to finding solutions.
-
Passion Fuels Growth: Exploring side projects like this keeps my curiosity alive and encourages me to think outside the box.
-
Reducing E-Waste: Reviving my old devices have been a great way to extend the life of devices, reduce electronic waste. It has given me a chance to learn new skills like setting up my own custom desktop interface inside Linux.
-
Fantastic companion for long commutes: fixing my PSP has been a treat it has helped me avoid that awkward staring that happens on the City Transit.
-
Conversation Starter: It also had an added benefit of being a great conversation starter. As I take it with me on long commutes heading downtown to Tech events, people see it and are shocked to see something so old still running great.
-
Personalizing Your Device Is Fun: Some things I may work on in the future include: Screen replacement, so I can play it in the sun Changing the shell of the play-station, and Soldering the charging from Mini-USB cable to USB-C.
Sometimes, stepping away from the screen and diving into a hands-on project can spark new ideas and perspectives. What’s something you’ve revived or explored outside of work that reignited your passion?
